The central area of Cuba is an interesting spot for all those who travel in a search for culture and history, above all if they get to know the city of Cienfuegos, known as the “Perla del Sur” (pearl of the south) due to its beauty, and founded by the French. The Cuban central meridional city of Cienfuegos gained its title of World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO due to its elegance and conservation, which is more than a motive to “pay it” a visit. A truly feast for the senses is getting to know this villa that became the first Iberian American urban historic centre founded in the 19th century and that received the award from the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO). That is why, authorities point out that the World Heritage Committee, which held a meeting some years ago in the South African city of Durban, convened the award due to the fact that the villa was the first in Latin America that in the beginnings of the 19th century introduced ideas of modernity, hygiene and order in urban projects. The award, the most relevant in its time from the tourist and cultural point of view, highlights the values of the city founded in 1819 by French colonizers, led by Luis de Clouet. It was also based in the remarkable conservation of the heritage assets in the spot, taking into account the birthplace; buildings of neoclassic style, worth to highlight also the cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción, the Colegio de San Lorenzo, the City Hall and the Tomás Terry theatre. Also worth to mention due to their architectural values, the Casa de los Leones and the palaces of Ferrer, Blanco and Goitizolo, as shown in history studies of the city. Known by the Cuban people as the Pearl of the South, Cienfuegos is a totally sailor town, main town of the province with the same name, with four thousand 177 squared kilometres and a bay of deep waters, and a mountainous area near the city. The city has rich history behind, tourists attractions of high quality (several hotels like Jagua, Rancho Luna and La Union). That is why this area is ideal for water sports, ecotourism and adventure tourism, supported by authorities and with a wide amount of fans from all over the world, with beautiful scenery for diving, above all in the Guajimico area. Cienfuegos is located 254 kilometres to the east of Havana and counts on many beautiful assets which make it one of the best places for different types of tourism and, mainly, active rest. A significant amount of Cuban sites count on the prestige of having this title in the list of World Heritage such as, the historical central area of Habana Vieja and its colonial fortresses and the archaeological area of the first French coffee plantations to the east of the country. We can add to this list the Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, the central-meridional Trinidad and the Valle de los Ingenios, in the same place, the Valle de Viñales and the National Parks of Granma and Alejandro de Humboldt, also in that part of the Island.
