Marazul, a Miami-based travel agency licensed to sell charter flights to authorized groups traveling to Cuba, has partnered with Delta Air Lines on flights from New York and Atlanta to Havana.

Weekly charter flights from JFK to Havana began Nov. 6 with an introductory roundtrip fare of $659; weekly flights from Atlanta begin Dec. 7 with roundtrip fares from $599. Marazul currently offers daily charter flights on Delta and Sky King Airlines from Miami to Havana.

Loosened government restrictions on travel to Cuba allowed Delta to reestablish the charter service with Marazul out of New York after a seven-year hiatus.

The Obama administration eased some restrictions earlier this year on travel to Cuba, allowing academic, cultural and religious travel during which participants meet and interact with Cubans. These people-to-people programs were last offered in 2003.

The new regulations also expanded charter flight options to Cuba, although flights from approved U.S. airports still require authorization from the Cuban government and must be operated by approved U.S. charter operators.

Previously, charters could depart only from Los Angeles, Miami and New York.
In addition to Atlanta, Los Angeles, JFK and Miami, authorized airports currently include Baltimore/Washington, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas-Fort Worth, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Key West, New Orleans, Tampa and San Juan.

Tampa-based Island Travel & Tours, a licensed operator recently approved by the Cuban government to offer charter air services for authorized travel to Cuba, will launch weekly charter flights from Baltimore-Washington to Havana on Sky King Airlines beginning on March 21.

“These flights will facilitate legal travel to Cuba for government officials, academics, cultural groups, agricultural interests, performing arts groups and Cuban-Americans visiting family members,” said William Hauf, president of Island Travel & Tours.
