A children’s theatre company from Cuba is preparing to finish its tour of the US with a performance at Fort Mason today (October 28th) and tomorrow.
Colmenita, which began touring the US on October 13th, comprises 22 children who have been working together to stage the musical comedy La Cucarachita Martina at venues around the country.
It is hoped that the performances will help to build stronger relations between the two countries, perhaps encouraging more Americans to book Cuba holidays and see the Caribbean island for themselves.
“If we don’t have communication between countries, we’re reduced to rumours and problems,” the San Francisco Chronicle reports Bill Martinez, the lawyer who helped the theatre group to get visas to the US, as saying.
“What better way to bring people together than through culture?”
It comes as the Theatre Festival of Havana began yesterday (October 27th), bringing together more than 80 local and foreign companies who will perform at venues around the capital.
